A temporada dos prémios finalmente atingiu a sua conclusão climática, na noite de 10 de Março, com a 96ª edição dos Oscars apresentada pelo comediante Jimmy Kimmel, uma aposta segura para a Academia sendo que Kimmel regressa pela quarta vez como anfitrião para este palco dourado. Este ambiente divertido, inofensivo e confortável destacou esta como uma das melhores cerimónias da Academia nos últimos anos, prestando respeito ao cinema nomeado e até a categorias não existentes nos Oscars como os duplos no cinema, mesmo sendo uma com vencedores maioritariamente previsíveis, contrastando com a imprevisibilidade grandiosa de Everything Everywhere All At Once, no ano anterior.
Apesar de uma diversidade de géneros e criações cinemáticas entre os nomeados, com filmes internacionais a ultrapassarem a barreira da língua, como Anatomie d’une Chute (Melhor Argumento Original) e The Zone of Interest (Melhor Filme Internacional e Melhor Som), e estranhas obras como Poor Things (3 Oscars Técnicos e Melhor Actriz Principal) a alcançarem o amor de uma audiência geral, Oppenheimer dominou a noite com a vitória de Melhor Filme, Melhor Realização para Christopher Nolan e Melhor Actor Principal e Secundário para Cillian Murphy e Robert Downey Jr., respectivamente. Apesar do fenómeno Barbenheimer, a obra cor-de-rosa de Greta Gerwig e Margot Robbie concluiu o espetáculo com o Oscar de Melhor Canção Original para Billie Eilish e Finneas pela música “What was I made for?”. Independentemente, ambos permanecem os derradeiros vencedores de 2023 ao conquistar as bilheteiras e a temporada de prémios, uma vitória invulgar nos últimos tempos.
Além da sua justificável previsibilidade nas categorias principais diversas surpresas agradáveis foram espalhadas pela cerimónia com algumas celebrações internacionais como Melhor Argumento Original para Anatomie d’une Chute, a segunda vitória de Hayao Miyazaki para Melhor Filme de Animação por The Boy and the Heron, e uma inédita conquista Japonesa na categoria de Melhor Efeitos Visuais para Godzilla Minus One, provando que o cinema internacional começa a dominar Hollywood.
