A Academia da Televisão revelou os nomeados aos Primetime Emmys de 2022, terça-feira dia 12 de Julho, através da dupla de atores J.B. Smoove e Melissa Fumero, que tomaram posse do anúncio. Para surpresa dos espectadores, a Academia escolheu evitar menções de canais ou serviços streaming com maior número de nomeações, principalmente devido à confusão gerada anualmente acerca da quantidade de co-produções e colaborações. No geral, a HBO saiu a vencedora nesta competição com cerca de 108 nomeações, superando (por pouco) a Netflix, que recebeu 105.

 

Decidiu-se, então, colocar o foco nas histórias nomeadas, como Succession (2018-) que se destacou, este ano, com o maior número de nomeações – 25 –, incluindo Melhor Drama. Esta narrativa criada por Jesse Armstrong foi seguida por Ted Lasso (2020-) que conseguiu 20 indicações, incluindo Melhor Comédia, igualando o número de nomeações do ano anterior. Na área de minisséries, The White Lotus (2021-2022) recebeu, também, 20 nomeações, surpreendendo especificamente na categoria de Melhor Atriz Secundária numa Mini-série, Telefilme ou Série de Antologia, onde ocupa 5 dos 7 indicados.

 

A ausência inesperada deste ano, para as audiências, está na série Yellowstone (2018-), sendo um dos maiores sucessos televisivos atualmente nos Estados Unidos, completamente ignorado pela Academia. A revelação de Stranger Things (2017-), Sadie Sink, junta-se à lista de omissões notáveis, juntamente com Selena Gomez, a única do trio principal não nomeada pela série Only Murders in the Building (2021-).

 

Uma re-organização sucedeu dentro da Academia em relação às regras da cerimónia e do processo de voto, redefinindo o significado de minissérie e alterando o limite de tempo em séries de comédia e drama. A cerimónia permanece, ainda, sem um apresentador definido, mas a sua emissão está confirmada para dia 12 de Setembro na NBC e no serviço de streaming da Peacock.
